The Philippines has been asking the Chinese government to allow Filipinos to continue fishing in the Chinese-restricted waters as an indication that they are interested for peaceful solutions as far as territorial disputes are concerned. This is probably why there are no more complaints that reach the media for the time being from the previously harrassed fishermen.
It is also another consideration that China is observing the incoming administration’s stint on the issue headed by President Rodrigo Duterte – a known punisher.
Duterte intends to repair the damaged relationship between China and the Philippines due to these territorial disputes in the South China Sea so, he will not withdraw nor push such claims including ownership of Scarborough Shoal.
