President-elect Rodrigo Duterte can’t hardly sign any purchase request to buy weapons for the destruction of Abbu Sayyaf because according to him, killing fellow Filipinos is very painful. This clearly shows that the tough-talking Philippine President really has a heart even to criminals – who is willing to give them a chance in lieu of peace.
However, he’s issuing an ultimatum to them to either “talk or fight”. This is after the Abbu Sayyaf beheaded two Canadian after Canada refused to pay ransom fearing that their citizens could become the main target of the kidnappings by the insurgents to raise funds – if they tolerate the demands. Duterte is hoping that the peace talks with communist rebels will have favorable results to counteract Abbu Sayyaf, instead of fighting them off in a civil war-like manner.
He is appealing to the rebels to honor the ceasefire declaration that would be followed by the peace talks between the government and the Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front by the third week of July. However, there’s no formal agreement yet as he is still talking with Jose Maria Sison. Duterte is also having dialogues with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Moro National Liberation Front about to iron things out – along with solving crimes and illegal drug busting.
