Can the PC Accused of Martial Law Abuses Regain the Lost Public Trust of the PNP?

Martial Law

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

The alleged Martial Law victims accuse the Philippine Constabulary who are noted to have very strict training in imposing the law during Marcos’ time. Now, the president wants the PC to replace the PNP that is now under various investigations on extra-judicial killings and Tokhang for Ransom incidents. Is this a good idea?

AIDG Disbanded

Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, chief of the Philippine National Police or PNP, announces the suspension of the war on drugs and the disbandment of the PNP Anti-Illegal Drugs Group or AIDG. This is to give way to a cleansing of the police ranks. The AIDG is implicated in the abduction and murder of South Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo last Oct. 18, 2016.

The Church to Help in Drug Rehabilitation

A drug rehabilitation program dubbed “Sanlakbay sa Pagbabago ng Buhay” is launched in the parishes by the archdiocese’s Restorative Justice Ministry in Manila. This aims to help in the rehabilitation of drug users who surrendered to the police.

Philippine Constabulary to Replace the PNP?

The PNP, a civilian agency, has become undisciplined after it replaced the defunct Philippine Constabulary or PC which is a military organization under the Armed Forces. It is a much more disciplined group than the PNP. Many people are happy over the news that the President wants to revive the PC that has a long history of law enforcement.

How to Regain Public Trust?

As soon as Bato suspends Oplan Tokhang and disbands the AIDG, the extra-judicial killings also stopped. What does this mean? Others speculate that the police felons cannot blame the campaign anymore for their crimes. The other side also expresses that there’s no more drug war to sabotage. Whatever the case may be, the PNP has lost public trust according to Senator Panfilo Lacson. Is the PC accused of Martial Law abuses during Marcos’ time be a better replacement of the PNP? Perhaps, all pro-Marcos would think so but what about the alleged Martial Law victims?
