Ghost in the Shell is Beautiful but What can be Missing?

Ghost in the Shell

Major Mira Killian has no idea who she was before. The character played by Scarlett Johansson now lives inside a technologically improvised body and she’s about to start a different kind of life. She effortlessly leaps and shoots amidst a deliriously oversaturated modern venue with power and purpose. In spite of that, she senses that there’s something wrong with her sense of her own self. It’s a problem that Ghost in the Shell still explores on how to go about giving the subject justice.

Whitewashing?

Dogged by controversy since the production was first announced, Ghost in the Shell, the futuristic action pic released over the weekend by Paramount, ultimately didn’t create much of a stir at the box office. Its notoriety — both among fans of the original Japanese manga on which it was based and among those who argued an Asian star should have been cast in the central role — may have raised its profile only to make it a more tempting target for demanding critics who appear to have sealed its fate. Crisis of the Human Soul

Like the 1995 animated movie under Mamoru Oshii as director and the Masamune Shirow manga, Ghost in the Shell focuses on a crisis of the human soul. It hastens by the unchecked use of technology that threatens to make people’s default biological housing obsolete. The original anime film questioned what it meant to be human in a time when consciousness can live outside the body and memories are still subject to editing and manipulation. Since technology’s integration with eternal life is not yet proven, Ghost in the Shell is the best justification.
