[VIDEO]: United States President Donald Trump will probably to attend the 2017 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in the Philippines in November, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
US’s Involvement with ASEAN
The ASEAN Summit in November is the main event attended by leaders from Asia, the fast-growing region. Former US President Barack Obama joined Southeast Asian heads of state and government for the annual meeting during his term. This will not change during the new US administration.
White House Invite
In a phone call after the 30th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, the White House discloses that the American President extended his invitation to the Philippine President to discuss the importance of U.S.-Philippines ties. It denotes that the relationship is heading in a very positive direction.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella confirmed the invitation by saying that: “The ambit of the conversation between the two leaders includes the expression of the commitment of the U.S. President to the PH-U.S. alliance and his interest in developing a warm, working relationship with the Filipino President.”
The Asian Way
Most people in Asia especially the Filipinos would not immediately jump off during the first invite. The invitee must feel that the invitation is sincere. The US president seems to act like an Asian in this aspect – and not too American which garners lots of appreciation in the region.
