The Placebo Effect of Positive Thinking

gemma

By: Gemma Lagasca

Positive ThinkingHealing yourself from any pain you might be experiencing is the placebo effect of positive thinking. The power of the placebo is hope.  This does not happen instantly. In fact you have to teach yourself not to be negative on things. No matter how hard a situation may seem, you need to see the positive side of it. It could be a blessing in disguise to make you avoid an even worse scenario. Here are some of the benefits of positive thinking:

  1. It allows you to control your emotions over anything that needs your course of action.
  2. It keeps you away from making impulsive actions and decisions that sometimes lead to more problems and mistakes.
  3. It makes you attract positive people and events in your life.
  4. It helps you avoid being depressed.
  5. It makes you calm no matter what the situation may be. Panicking will only cause more harm than good.
  6. It makes you heal yourself and move on fast after an untoward incident in your life.

As hope is the power of positive thinking, most people conclude that positive thinking is just for religious people. This is absolutely not true although faith can lead to positive thinking. Believing that they won’t have trials more than they can handle is enough to drive away negative energies. This is tantamount to say that every problem has a given solution.  All we need to do is face it and know that it will be over soon. Positive thinking is a very powerful influence in our mind and since the brain is like a magnet, whatever it conceives can be manifested.

In the medical field, a placebo is known as a pharmacologically inert substance which may produce therapeutic results because of the belief in its efficacy. There are documents online indicating that a placebo is an inactive substance or procedure, which on its own has no effect but often used as a control. A placebo effect takes place when the subject given the placebo shows similar result as the experimental substance or procedure.

Over the years, the following scientists and prominent people have these to say which are suggestive of the placebo effect of positive thinking:

  • Plato’s theory of forms suggests that the material objects around us are just abstractions of the real world, and that our intellect interacts with such entities which are inherently non-physical.
  • Thomas Aquinas, a Christian Philosopher said that while a soul can exist independently of the flesh, it must be a part of the human body to become a true person.
  • Rene Descartes, a French Philosopher is the most known wise man with regards to his theories on mind and matter.  He claimed that immaterial mind and the material body are two completely separate entities that somehow managed to interact and exert control over each other.
  • German Physician, Johann Christian August Heinroth in the 19th century coined the term psychosomatic, referring to his theory that the mind can encourage both mental and physical illness.
  • A French Internist and hypnotism advocated later in the 19th century, Hippolyte Bernheim that developed the Suggestion and Autosuggestion Theory describing the psyche’s influence over illness which is known today as the placebo effect.

There may be contradictions with modern medicine with regards to the theories on placebo effect of positive thinking but as long as a person shows remarkable relief from discomforts and bad condition, by just nourishing the mind with pleasant things, this is very much encouraged.

Stresses Brought by Technology

carla2

By: Gene Carla Chua

&bbsp;

Technology StressesTechnology has made our lives more convenient for years. From washing clothes to sending letters, technology has affected us greatly and it has made our lives so much easier. However, technology could also be causing us stress. Studies show that humans spend over 3 days in a year waiting for files or other things to load in their computer. In Tibet when you send a letter, it is normal to not get a reply in 30 days or even more, but when you send a text or a chat message and not get a reply in 30 seconds, you get angry. Here are other instances when technology has caused us stress;

Socializing

• Wherever we are and whatever we are doing we always feel the need to post a status about it, Tweet it, and post a picture in Instagram. Most of us send more sms’s than we are talking. Imagine just doing what you are supposed to do, without reaching for your phone first. This causes us to waste time on things that we are not really supposed to do, and with that we run out of time for finishing whatever it is that we are really needed to do.

• Whenever we post anything and someone likes or retweets it we feel really good, but what about when no one does? Some people feel lonely or unwanted. Sounds like I’m overrating? This actually does happen.

The iPhone, café addiction

• Try walking in a café and observe what everyone is doing, most of them if not all have an iPhone, Black Berry, or a smart phone in hand, tweeting or looking for the newest apps. So if these people do this in a café, then we could probably say that they do it everywhere. This is the problem with technology, we cannot live without it. What happens when we lose our phones? Well, TRAGEDY.

Memories

• We used to have scrapbooks and photo albums filled with our precious memories. These days pictures are saved in our phones, and digital scrapbooks have been created. These are all saved in your phone, laptop or tablet’s internal memory, but there will always come a time that we have to replace these gadgets. Worse-case scenario is that they break and those memories will be irretrievable.

News

• Ten years ago we need to wait for the evening news before we get in the know as to what happened during the day. Today we get news notifications from our phones and there are apps dedicated to informing us with what’s happening. We need that constant feeling that we know what is happening in the world and this causes clutter. We are filled with information that we really don’t need, plus not all news is good.

Lastly –

Gaming

• A lot of people are addicted to games. Some even spend all day without doing anything productive. Excessive gaming has caused death in Korea, but that’s not just the reason as to why it is causing us stress. Games stimulate our brain. Stimulates us a little too much that when we look for something fun to do we require more powerful activity. This makes us bored.

• This does not apply to gaming. We tweet and Facebook too much as well. It’s like a drug, we do it too much and get addicted then when we stop we feel so low. When we get the time to relax and be idle it doesn’t feel as good.

Technology is now a vital part of our lives but this does not mean that we have to embrace the stresses it causes us also – we have to learn how to stick to the healthy limits when using the products of technology for our own advantage.

Remedies for 8 Weird Physical Manifestations

gemma

By: Gemma Lagasca

body quirksAre you sometimes bothered by strange body quirks? Don’t ignore them. Your body is telling you that there’s something unhealthy about your lifestyle. Correct them at once to be comfortable and to avoid more serious conditions from developing.

  1. The uncontrollable hiccups.  Hiccups arise due to the contraction of the diaphragm. The common causes of hiccups are binge-eating, eating without proper chewing and accidental swallowing of air. This kind of strange condition will just disappear on its own. However, you can do little tricky things to draw away the hiccups – drink a glass of water, get a small plastic or paper bag and hold it nearer to your mouth and nose and then breathe for several counts. Try also to hold your breath as long as you can for few times.
  2. The “brain freeze”. Frozen foods like ice cream tend to be the culprit to experience an episode of brain freeze. “Brain freeze” or ice cream headaches takes place when you eat something cold that touches the sensitive nerve somewhere in your mouth. The nerves will trigger the blood vessels in the front area of your head to swell.  The quick swelling is the reason for the mythical term “brain freeze”. The solution for this odd body reaction is just to eat the frozen food slowly.

  3. Vertigo in action. Sometimes you feel like your house is moving for a short span of time or sometimes persists for over an hour.  You can’t distinguish if that is dizziness or vertigo. Vertigo takes place when there is nerve damage in the inner ear.  There is a feeling of ear discomfort and you will soon observe involuntary motions and eye movements.
  4. Mood killer Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. The sweating mostly appears on the soles, worse in palms, face and more in the armpits. Though this condition is uncomfortable, the affected people are mostly the healthy ones. Recommended remedies are Botox injection, antiperspirants with aluminum chloride or surgery.
  5. Raccoon eyes. The dark color that surrounds the eyes is caused by fatigue – aside from age factors. This is mainly due to lack of sleep – making the skin look pale thus emphasizing the dark circle around the eyes. In other condition, raccoon eyes can also happen because of allergies and faulty genetic traces.
  6. Numbing of arm or leg. This sensation is caused by pressure on nerves making them incapable to pass on messages to the brain. This is just temporary and a risk-free condition. The recommended solution is very simple – change your sleeping position. However, if the condition persists and you are already experiencing the tingling factor, it may be a symptom of a more serious condition that needs further evaluation.
  7. The ear popping. Ear popping usually happens while in the plane because of the pressure and altitude changes that rapidly affects the inner and outer ears. To aid the condition, close your mouth, hold your nose and make a gentle blow. Yawning is also helpful or you may chew a chewing gum while on board.
  8. Red nose like Rudolf? Red nose is a chronic skin condition also called Rosacea. It often appears on sensitive skin particularly on the face and nose area. This is mostly seen in men than women. It is a genetically acquired condition but it can be treated thru laser treatment and Dermabrasion.

Yes, we all have our own mannerisms but when it comes to symptoms of diseases – better be knowledgeable on how to deal with them.

Outcome of Viagra Abuse Inherited by Cialis

welcome

By: Elena Grace Flores

ED MedResearchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles noticed a substantial number of fatalities due to cardiovascular malfunctions with close association with Viagra use in year 2000. 522 deaths occurred within 5 hours of taking the minimal Viagra dosage of 50 mg. Common factors include the same age group below 65 years old, without history of cardiovascular conditions and no possible risk of heart ailments. Some deaths were traced from nitrates and amyl nitrate use together with Viagra.

These deaths were never acknowledged publicly and there was downplaying of the real side effects and damaging results from the association of these drugs with other elements in various prescribed or non-prescribed medications. The worst happened when Viagra was used by teenagers without ED as party drug. This was reported by the law enforcement officers from Athens, Georgia. There were also reports in 2002 from the study conducted by California Department of Health in San Francisco that bisexual and gay men Viagra users were four times higher than heterosexual men. The dangerous part was, they were fond of combining Ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and crystal methamphetamine with Viagra.

Finding the Right Approach

The FDA and the maker of Viagra, Pfizer already bombarded the public with too much information but the excitement of vicious men was leading others into the pit. Men on HIV medications have greater chances of being affected with ED. The right approach as always indicated by the manufacturers and government agencies is to consult a doctor and never self-medicate. They are the ones who know for sure that some protease inhibitors trigger tremendous blood level increase when associated with Viagra thus resulting to visual impairment, fainting, headache and priapism or painful and prolonged erection.

Irresponsible people who distributed these sexual boosters mainly Viagra plus Levitra and Cialis as power display during parties to people without caring about their medical history were the culprits. Takers never had an idea that it was fatal to combine these ED medications with their party drugs or even with what they were taking during those times. Naturally, the bad outcome of those incidents gave a bad name to not only Viagra and Levitra but also Cialis – that was released only in a much later date.

The Ultimate Truth

Cialis is one of the five oral drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat erectile dysfunction along with Levitra, Staxyn, Viagra and Stendra and all of these work by increasing the flow of blood into the penis so that when a male is sexually stimulated, he can get an erection. The good side of Cialis aside from having the FDA approval is that it takes effect faster (within 15 minutes) unlike Levitra and Viagra which takes effect in about 30 minutes. Also, Cialis effect lasts much longer (36 hours) that’s why it is called “The Weekend Pill”. Others only last for about 5 to 6 hours. On the not so good side, Cialis should not be taken if you have the following conditions:

  • If you have suffered from a heart attack, stroke or life threatening arrhythmia (irregular heart rate) within the last 6 months
  • If you have uncontrolled high or low blood pressure
  • If you experienced chest pain and dizziness while having sex

The side effects of Cialis and other approved ED drug remedies would be as follows:

  • Headache
  • Upset Stomach or Heartburn
  • Flushing (feeling warm)
  • Changes in vision (color, glare)
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Back Pain

Should the above symptoms persist for more than 4 hours, then you have to go to your doctor to check what is wrong. In addition treat it as an emergency if you suffer any of the following after taking Cialis:

  1. Rash
  2. Painful Erection
  3. Prolonged Erection (longer than 4 hours as this can damage the penis)
  4. Fainting
  5. Chest Pains
  6. Itching or burning while urinating

In addition, stop taking Cialis if you experience sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. This might be a rare vision problem called NAION (Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy) where the blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve. People prone to NAION are the following:

  • Over 50 years old
  • Smokers
  • Have Heart Disease
  • Have Diabetes
  • Have High Blood Pressure
  • Have High Cholesterol Level
  • Have Certain Eye Problems

Furthermore, there are certain situations in which Cialis may not be safe to take. Before taking them, inform you doctor:

  • If you are allergic to any drugs including Viagra or other ED medications
  • If you are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications including herbal and dietary supplements
  • If you are scheduled for surgery, including dental surgery
  • If you take nitro-glycerine or a long-acting nitrate to treat chest pain as when combined with any ED medications can cause dangerously low blood pressure.
  • If you are taking alpha-blockers for blood pressure or prostate problems, dangerously low blood pressure can also be caused when combined with ED medications.
  • If you have kidney trouble or if on dialysis
  • If you have stomach ulcers
  • If you have a bleeding disorder such as haemophilia
  • If you have been told not to have sexual intercourse due to health reasons

As an additional precaution, always follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Inquire from your doctor if something is not clear to you. Take these drugs exactly as directed and take it whole, do not break it. You can take this pill with or without food. Taking it more or less than prescribed by your doctor will be risky. Do not take it more than once a day and if you have to take it daily, then take one almost the same time each day. These drugs should be kept in its original container and out of reach of children. Keep them away from excess heat and moisture. Throw away expired medication or if no longer preserved in good condition.

Cialis like any prescription drug should be taken with your doctor’s approval. The not so good side may outweigh the good side as enumerated above but the benefit you can get out of it really serves its purpose. The outcome could mean complete satisfaction for you and your partner plus an added confidence you will feel when engaging in intimate activities. As an added warning, be careful when ordering online, it should come from reputable companies so you can be sure you are getting the right drug and the right formulation as prescribed by your doctor.

Top 5 Considerations when Setting Up a Coffee Shop

gemma

By: Gemma Lagasca

Coffee ShopWorking people are haggling with time to finish the task for the day – and that’s the normal scene during weekdays for most of us. Having a cup of brewed coffee is a helpful way to fuel-up your mind and body. It’s interesting to see those people who love to stay hours in a coffee shop. How relaxing indeed to stay in a cozy place with soft jazz music playing at the background – while the aromatic scent of fresh coffee is on the air. You can seat-back and relax on a comfortable couch with your laptop on the table. Aside from catching up with work, is a suitable place to bond with friends too online. Just activate the connection over the net and login to your favorite social media or take time in answering your emails without looking so stressful.

After a while, the coffee shop assistant calls your name to inform you that your hot latte is ready. Known coffee shops owners know the secret techniques on how to encourage people to drink coffee from their shops instead of making it at home? In fact, we can easily buy coffee beans and other flavorings from the supermarket if we want to. We can even use a specialized coffee maker to create our own version of brewed coffee. Why is it that nothing can beat a coffee shop when it comes to coffee drinking? Here’s why:

  • It’s the taste. Everybody can make coffee at home but an established coffee shop has its own signature flavor that is tested with time. They have created personalized servings using special coffee beans, chocolates, whip cream, creamers, sugar and toppings to improve their products better. Additionally, every shop has its own style of coffee cups, cutlery and table settings to compliment the tasty coffee.
  • Complete coffee-making facility from grinder to brewer. Coffee beans that are brewed right after grinding are the best. It’s not just practical to buy these facilities for home use because they are very costly and maintenance costs can also add up to the burden.
  • The shop’s ambiance is enhanced with its interior designs and lighting. The glass walls also will allow a coffee drinker to watch people passing by. The landscape, ornamental plants, sounds and tricks from a water fountain are enticing view while mesmerizing over coffee. The relaxing atmosphere is just so irresistible that the soft couch is like calling a tired body to lay on it. The color combinations are welcoming and the art works hanged on the walls are classical and inspiring.

  • The relaxing sound is holistic. Although you can easily turn-on an iPod at home to listen to your favorite music, it is different to hear the well selected coffee shop music that is so soothing. Maybe the right volume and frequency flowing freely are also additional factors why it’s so therapeutic to just hang around in those places.
  • A social but discreet place to meet or make friends. Going out with friends is indeed a part of social life. Bonding can also be done at home if you are willing to invite your friends and entertain them. But it’s very different when you dress up and be seen outside of your premises. You can just enjoy the company with the coffee without worrying on washing the mugs or used utensils.  It’s nice to get-off from those clutters sometimes.

Going out once in a while is priceless. It helps you renew your minds from the daily grind in life at least temporarily. People just don’t go to coffee shops for coffee – also the nice things that come with it which is vital in renewing your energy for the challenges ahead of you. These things are essential considerations when deciding to open a coffee shop for business.
