The first anti-novel coronavirus drug is now ready for marketing by the National Medical Products Administration. Favilavir, known as Fapilavir is an antiviral that is efficient in treating the novel coronavirus. While this is ongoing, the election fight of Former senator Bongbong Marcos goes to the next level. He has said that a national post is in the horizon for 2022. Marcos’ electoral protest in the 2016 vice presidential race causes a lot of changes in the country’s voting system. Fraud seems to cloud its results. Therefore, this prompts Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon to announce that the Comelec en banc is now on a schedule to test run the mobile voting app for possible use in the May 2022 polls with 4 software on trading.

Guanzon, the commissioner in charge of the Office for Overseas Voting, said that apart from the Philippines, the test run will also run through San Francisco in the United States, Singapore and in the Middle East in June. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) identifies these countries beforehand.

Testing the Software for Convenience

The mobile voting app testing is part of the poll body’s mandate to further improve the country’s election system, Guanzon stressed. She also said that the poll body always seeks for new ways to ensure access to Filipinos who are voting overseas. Likewise, Guanzon added that she intends to propose to the commission en banc to consider the use of mobile app voting software for domestic voters.

Overseas Voters

Another thing that the Comelec is working on is to increase the number of registered voters, particularly overseas. During the May 2019 elections, there were a total of 1,822,173 registered overseas voters. 578,185 overseas voters were taken out from 2016 and 2019 polls due to inconsistent voting. “Right now, we have about 1.3 million voters,” noted Guanzon, adding that they would help address the perennial problem of mobility among Filipinos abroad. Many OFWs are located far from the Philippine posts, where voter registration activities are being conducted.

4 Suppliers are Trading

Disabilities, pregnancies, and old age can hinder voters to exercise their rights. Therefore, they have four suppliers who would perform the test run for a mobile voting app suitable for the commission’s specifications. They are Indra Sistemas, Voatz, Smartmatic International, and Scytl.

Registration Deadline

The filing of applications for overseas voter registration starts on Dec. 16, 2019. It shall run until Sept. 30, 2021. Citizens of the Philippines abroad, who are legitimate to vote, and are at least 18 years of age on May 9, 2022, are eligible to register. The Comelec really intends to adopt an online voting system according to the voters’ profile. On a separate note, BBM obviously welcomes these efforts. The reports on these initiatives can even be found on his official website. Despite the criticisms of others, it is best to give Comelec a chance to gain people’s trust.
