President Rodrigo Duterte fulfilled his campaign promise that he will allow the burial of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as requested by the Marcos family. He confirmed this after reports that former Senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. said that his family has chosen to bury him on September 18 which is one week after the late president’s birthday.
Duterte explained that Marcos was qualified to be interred at the heroes’ cemetery in Taguig City because he was a former president and soldier which is in the AFP’s guidelines, adding that it was up to the Marcos family to choose when the final rites should be held – and he fully supports that.
Duterte also advised those against Marcos’ burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani to hold protests since it is their right to hold peaceful assembly as per the constitution. In fact, he would order local officials to provide anti-Marcos groups permits to “use the streets” as venue for their protests that can last for even a month as long as traffic would not be jeopardized.
