Davao City administrator Jesus Melchor Quitain who is drafting President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s inaugural speech on June 30 is trying to keep the message short and straightforward to keep it at 5 minutes period. It might be formal and in English but will still be in line with the President’s character. Duterte’s message will be calling all Filipinos to help in uplifting the country.
Swearing words that Duterte is fond of should be eliminated since this is a a formal speech. Duterte’s speech will be limited but includes quotes from famous world leaders. “I have no friends to serve. I have enemies to contain in governance” and “You cannot help the poor by discouraging the rich” are among those inspiring lines.
Quitain has been Duterte’s speechwriter for 14 years and already keen on Duterte’s memorable quotes like; “Ours must not only be a government for the people and by the people. More than that, this government must be a government must be a government for the least, last and lowest.” Another one would be: “The trouble with us in government is we talk too much, act too slow and do too little.” Quite a task to shorten the message for there are many things that should be addressed.
