welcome By: Elena Grace Flores
Incoming Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello and chief peace negotiator said there could be a possible ceasefire between government forces and the New People’s Army or NPA as soon as President Duterte assumes office. This should be part of Duterte’s Nation Address on July 25.

Talks between the new administration’s peace panel and the National Democratic Front or NDF in Oslo, Norway last June 13 to 14 resulted to this positive news. NDF is the political arm of the Communist Party and acted as the NPA’s representative during the said meeting.

The joint statement has been signed for the peace talks to start aroung third week of July. According to CNN Philippines; “They agreed that after the formal resumption of the talks, both parties will declare a unilateral ceasefire and as a result of this declaration there will be a creation of a monitoring, a ceasefire monitoring committee, to monitor the implementation of this ceasefire,” said Bello, who has previously served in the government peace panel in talks with the NDF.
