Gov. Imee Marcos Cannot Feel the President’s Hand on Bongbong’s Electoral Protest

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

The President defends his relationship with the Marcos family. He clarifies that it isn’t a political alliance but simply friendship. Du30 also addressed those who have been calling on him to “prosecute” and “punish” the Marcoses for alleged human rights abuses during Martial Law. The only adults then were Imelda and Ferdinand. Imee and Bongbong were young. Solon Edcel Lagman disputes the President. However, Imee Marcos denies that Du30’s hand is on Bongbong Marcos’ electoral protest against VP Leni Robredo.

Lagman’s Bitterness

Imee and Bongbong Marcos were 17 and 15, respectively, when Martial Law was declared in 1972. They were young adults by the time their father’s term ended, but not in the position to do something about it. “They attained the age of majority shortly after the proclamation of Martial Law, and they were already adults during the height of the Martial Law regime,” said Lagman. Lagman is bitter because his brother was among the thousands of “desaparecidos” who disappeared without a trace during those years. They blamed his disappearance to the late President Marcos.

Campaign Donor

The President was a long-time Davao City mayor. He is quite open about his ties with the Marcos clan. The President approved the hero’s burial for the late President Marcos. He jokingly said that Marcos’ eldest daughter, Imee, was among his campaign donors but insists that the decision is lawful. The Ilocos Norte governor downplays Du30’s claims.

The President’s Battle

As the President battles the Ombudsman and the Supreme Court Chief Justice, the election protest of Marcos goes quiet. The appointees of the former President Noynoy Aquino retaliate to his accusations of corruption against them by demanding to disclose his bank accounts. He responds by saying that he is ready to step down with them if anyone can find even a dollar on such Singapore bank account in question that he allegedly owns.

Hand on the Electoral Protest

Gov. Imee Marcos, meanwhile, said that she cannot feel that the President’s hand is on Bongbong Marcos’ electoral protest. The process remains slow even if many think that it’s the faster ever protest of its kind. The governor has high regard for Du30 as a leader who adheres to the constitution. He may prefer Bongbong Marcos to be his heir to the presidency when he steps down. However, it can only be done through lawful means.
