Senator Hontiveros’ Claim

Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros calls for President Bongbong Marcos to appoint a full-time DA Secretary. According to her claim, the president already has many responsibilities that he’s totally hands-on like the economy and the military. So, there’s confusion about the DA’s sugar law. However, the people asked if faking PBBM’s signature is okay with her.

No Sugar Shortage

Contrary to the claim of Senator Hontiveros, there’s no sugar shortage. In the DA’s inventory, there are still 171,000 metric tons of refined sugar and up to 240,000 metric tons of raw ones. Clearly, there are some traders who took advantage of the resignations in the department. Just like in the 1950s when middle men were guilty of hoarding the products.

Marcos is Right

The Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food has refuted reports of sugar shortage in the country. Its president said that he cannot allow sugar importation right now because it can harm local producers. Meanwhile, President Marcos can see that there may be a need to import sugar by October yet. But only around 150,000 metric tons and not 300,000.
