Why does Robredo Insist on ARMM for Bongbong Marcos’ Election Recount?

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

Initially, Bongbong Marcos seeks the annulment of election results in Basilan, Lanao del Sur, and Maguindanao. All three are in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or ARMM. Robredo’s Camp assumed that they are Marcos’ 3 pilot provinces for the recount but to their dismay. Camarines Sur, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental are the ones stated in the preliminary brief.

Slim Margin

The 3 provinces for the election recount are not only crucial because they are the priority – but they can dictate the trail of the electoral protest because of the slim margin. Robredo placed first in these areas. They consist of 2,756 clustered precincts. She garnered a total of 477,985 votes, compared to Marcos’ 169,160 votes. Robredo won with only 263,473 votes lead over Marcos in the overall Vice Presidential count.

Annulment of Election Results

Marcos’ annulment petition for the election results in the 3 Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao was due to the “widespread presence of terrorism, violence, threats, coercion, force, intimidation” and other anomalies such as batch-feeding and pre-shading of ballots. This was disclosed prior to the preliminary conference. It is also noted that Comelec retrieved ballot boxes from this region for the alleged local protest use.

Baseless Claims

Robredo refers to Marcos’ protest as “baseless claims.” Robredo assails the Marcos camp for not providing relevant admissible documentary evidence. They rely heavily on affidavits of his supporters, she said. Her lawyer, Romulo Macalintal also criticizes’ Marcos’ final choice of the priority provinces for the recount. He said that Marcos himself is unsure of his own protest and he is just fishing for evidence.

Robredo’s Resistance

Marcos has moved on to the new pilot provinces that he is confident that would show clearly that he was cheated. It is a surprise that Robredo insists of him sticking to the ARMM provinces after Comelec’s hand on the ballot boxes there. She can’t blame people to think that they have done some “magic” on those votes because of her camp’s resistance to the new pilot provinces of her opponent that include her party’s own bailiwick.
