Smooth transition already underwent two weeks before
President-elect Rodrigo Duterte takes his oath on June 30 before Supreme Court Associate Justice Bienvenido Reyes. In fact, outgoing President Noynoy Aquino was described as “gracious” by Duterte’s team while showing them around.
No direct reason was given why Duterte selected Associate Justice Reyes to do the task but it has known that Reyes studied law at San Beda College in Manila. Both Duterte and Reyes belonged to the Lex Talionis fraternity in the same university. Reyes at 68 was also an appointee of outgoing President Benigno Aquino III in 2011.
AJ Reyes once declined the appointment to Chief Justice in favor of his more senior colleagues. We can’t help but thinking about Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno’s fate – is she going or staying under Duterte’s rule?
