Senator Imee Marcos talks about her reaction to President Duterte’s SONA in an interview with DZBB
The SONA 2020 of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte overwhelms Senator Imee Marcos. She’s happy to announce that most of her bills are now the priorities of the government going forward. This results in at least 20 items for her homework. It is notable, however, that fund generation is significant in every plan. The OFW welfare remains pending all this time. Senator Marcos expresses the urgency to get this done at the soonest.
COVID-Related Fund Sources
Medical reserve core, local medical supplies, and economic programs require ample investments. COVID-related fund sources are a must. This could cost some asset liquidations by the Duterte administration. Zero-interest loans are also under scrutiny. To sell public properties and to acquire more loans are crucial to rebuild the economy. Needless to say, these efforts must go through careful considerations. Therefore, the Senate has the responsibility to weigh the pros and cons.
Coco Levy Fund
Marcos’ Coco Levy Fund bill version includes a trust fund. This can award the beneficiaries. The farming funds must supplement the struggling coconut industry. It is known that the descendants of the original members now face another challenge. Coconut prices are down to 8 Pesos a kilo during the pandemic. To re-align the logistics that leads to the decline of its industry is important. Then, to find opportunities for it to thrive again should follow.
