welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

It has been a re-battle between Leni Robredo and Bongbong Marcos’ that both camps have their own share of delaying the electoral protest. Needless to say, there’s always the right time for everything. The preliminary conference’s setting in motion is not an exception. June 21 is just right in time if Marcos is to assume a cabinet post in May.

One Year Ban is Over

The one year ban will soon be over that hinders Bongbong Marcos to take on a cabinet post. He is rumored to assume the DILG post after the one-year ban for defeated political candidates is over. The late Jesse Robredo, the husband of his rival Leni Robredo, died in a plane crash when he was the DILG Secretary under the Aquino administration. Robredo says that she will respect such appoint should the president decides on it.

Macalintal’s Delaying Tactics

Atty. Romulo Macalintal, Robredo’s lawyer earlier sought clarification from the High Court. He argues that Marcos should pay in full first because he filed the election protest and theirs was a counter-protest. Macalintal also added that Marcos should pay a total of P185 million since his protest has a first cause of action that involves all 92,000 clustered precincts.

Rodriguez’ Response

Marcos’ lawyer, Atty. Vic Rodriguez, believes the motion like any other motions from Robredo’s camp is their another delaying tactic. Rodriguez criticized Macalintal’s argument that they must pay only after Marcos’ protest is finished because it had long been decided by the Tribunal. The rule says that “the election protest filed by Senator Marcos is sufficient in form and substance.”

Expensive Search for Truth

Rodriguez also said that Robredo’s camp is “making the search for truth very, very expensive.” The Marcos camp pleaded for the dismissal of Robredo’s counter-protest after they failed to settle the required payment – but the court gave them another five days to comply. Meanwhile, around 400 Bongbong Marcos supporters converged anew at the Supreme Court (SC) with lighted candles in a show of support for their candidate. They pray for the speedy disposition of the decision from SC justices. Then the announcement came that the preliminary conference date is already set. It is indeed true that there’s a right time for everything.

Baguio Candle Vigil Worked: Preliminary Conference for Marcos’ Protest is Set for June 21

vigil

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

Believe it or not. Just when the news breaks out that Leni Robredo was given five days to pay the required deposit for her counter protest and that the omnibus motion of Bongbong Marcos to dismiss it is deferred, the Supreme Court hereby sets the preliminary conference for Marcos’ electoral protest on 21 June 2017 at 2 PM. Perhaps the Baguio vigil by Marcos’ supporters worked.

Marcos’ Motion is Granted

The Supreme Court (SC) sitting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) has finally granted the motion of former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to set the preliminary conference in motion to let the recount happen on his protest against Vice President Leni Robredo.

Preliminary Conference Schedule

The SC Public Information Office said that the first preliminary conference is scheduled on June 21, Wednesday, at 2 PM. This is when the issues are shortlisted with the matching completion dates. This is needed to start the process of verifying evidence and conduct the recount of votes as prayed for by Bongbong Marcos.

SC Acted on Various Incidents

“The Presidential Electoral Tribunal, in its session of 25 April 2017, acted on various incidents in ET Case No. 005 (Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos v. Maria Leonor “Leni Daang Matuwid” G. Robredo). The PET granted protestant’s motion for the setting of the preliminary conference and has SET this case for the preliminary conference on 21 June 2017 at 2:00 in the afternoon, WITHOUT PREJUDICE to the Tribunal’s resolution of all remaining pending incidents,” the statement announced.

The Vigil Worked for SC to Finally Move

The high court also said that the preliminary conference would also cover Robredo’s counter-protest and not only limited to Marcos’ protest. This is actually what Marcos supporters asked for that whatever the SC may decide for as long as they move forward with the protest, it is good enough for them. The candle vigil seemed to work after all.
