In life, what we planned for our family is not always what will happen. We just have to be flexible and set pride aside. There may be tough choices we have to make but as long as we have faith, things will fall into place when the right time comes – and we will then realize why they happened that way. Enjoy this Sweet Smiles script-

Scene 1: In the living room, mommy Beth and baby Bea are rehearsing. Daddy Ben arrives from the office.

Daddy Ben: Seems like our baby girl is joining a talent show… (Mommy Beth & baby Bea kisses the dad)

Mommy Beth: Not at all, our daughter would just like to show you how talented she is. She’s just 3 years old yet she wants to go to school already. I said; if Dad would agree and would like your presentation, she can. (To Bea) Are you ready, baby girl? Show daddy how talented you are while I’ll set the table ready for dinner. (To Dad) Okay dad, just sit back & relax.

Baby Bea: Yes, mom. (Bea recites the poem: “The Creation” and sings the action song: “I’ve Got Joy”).

“The Creation”God made the earth, God made the sea.
God made the fish and the birds that fly.
Animals, flowers, trees so tall,
God made everything, great and small.
God made all that I can see.
God made you and God made me.

Baby Bea: I thank you. (Then she bows, Dad claps his hands)

Baby Bea: Thank You Dad.I would like to sing a song for you now.
(Bea sings the action song)

I’ve got joy down in my heart, deep, deep down in my heart.J – O – Y down in my heart, deep, deep down in my heart.

Baby Bea: How about you?
(Both hands pointing to her Dad on the last line of the song)
Daddy Ben: Of course my dear, having you both is my greatest joy. That was wonderful! (Dad claps his hands again for Bea’s presentation)

Voice over of Mommy Beth: Dinner’s ready! (Daddy Ben carries Baby Bea to the dinner table)

Scene 2: At the dinner table while the family is having dinner, they had a small talk.

Mommy Beth: So how was it? Is baby Bea ready for school?

Daddy Ben: Yes, of course. Do you really want to go to school now? (To Baby Bea)

Baby Bea: Yes, dad and mommy would like to be a Teacher again too.
Daddy Ben: What does that mean? You like to work again as a Teacher? (To mommy Beth)

Mommy Beth: Yes, if you will allow me so I can help you also in the expenses here in the house and we could save also for Bea’s education.

Daddy Ben: No, my dear, that’s why I work double time now. Just give me your “sweet smiles” and I’ll be fine. I’ll provide you both with everything that you need. (Mommy Beth and baby Bea gave daddy Ben their sweetest smiles then he bid them goodbye.)

Daddy Ben: I love you both, sleep tight. Goodnight… I have to leave now for my part-time job in the restaurant.

Baby Bea: We love you too, daddy, goodnight.

Mommy Beth: Okay, bye! Dad, you take care …

Narration: While the mother and daughter were asleep, they had no idea about the accident involving daddy Ben.

Scene 3: At the hospital the doctor speaks to Mommy Beth who is crying after she was informed about the accident. She learned about it at daytime already.

Doctor Reyes: I’m sorry Mrs. Francisco but it will take several months for your husband to work again as he was badly hit by the big truck that bumped his motorcycle that throw him out several meters away. Investigation is still going on as there was no witness who saw the accident this dawn, the truck driver was kind enough to bring him to the hospital and told us that it was not his fault.

Mommy Beth: I understand doctor – maybe my husband had fallen asleep while driving because he was tired and sleepy already. Can I speak to him now?

Doctor Reyes: Yes, go ahead; he could be awake by now. Just don’t show him your tears. Be strong.

Mommy Beth: Thanks, Doctor Reyes, I will. (As she enters the room she could hear her husband crying. She went near him & embraced him)

Daddy Ben: Why did this happen to me? How could I provide for you and baby Bea with all that you need now? This is so unfair! I am really sorry.

Mommy Beth: You don’t have to be sorry, my dear. We have to thank the Lord that you survived that accident. Don’t worry I’m here for you and our daughter. Remember last night? I was trying to ask permission from you to work again. I do have an urgent offer to work but in Thailand as an English teacher. The pay is really good and it will just be a two year contract. We could save some capital for sure for a business by the time my contract ends so, you don’t have to work day and night. Please don’t get me wrong. This is for us too.

Daddy Ben: I really don’t want you to work. I should be the one working but with my condition now, how can i? What will your parents say to me now… a parasite?

Mommy Beth: Please don’t say that. Any minute from now they will be here also with baby Bea. They even volunteered to take care of you and our daughter while I’m away. We’re a family! We care for each other.
(At this point the in-laws arrived with their granddaughter. They just brought in baby Bea inside the hospital room, waved and went out again to buy food.) (Mommy Beth carried Baby Bea to kiss her dad then baby Bea sits on the hospital bed)

Baby Bea: Hello, Daddy, grandpa and grandma says we will be staying in their big house that’s why we fetch you here. They say – it’s our home too. Are you okay now daddy? Let’s go home. (Dad wiping his tears…)Dad, why are you crying?

Daddy Ben: Your mom will be leaving us soon. She will teach in Thailand.

Baby Bea: Mom, I don’t want you to leave us. We will be very sad. We will all stay happy in grandpa and grandma’s home. Please don’t go to Thailand. Please don’t leave us. (Baby Bea crying already so, mom got carried away and burst into tears)

Mommy Beth: My dearest baby, you know that I want to be always near you. I’m doing this for our family. Mommy will be able to buy you your favorite Barbie doll and all the things that you need.

Baby Bea: No, I just want you here with us. I need you more than the Barbie doll. I love you mom, don’t you love me?

Mommy Beth: I love you and your dad more than anything in this world. Please understand me now. Grandpa, grandma and your dad will take care of you while I’m away.

Daddy Ben: Maybe, it’s not a good idea for you to teach in Thailand you will be alone there no relatives and friends to look after you also.

Mommy Beth: Just give me both your “sweet smiles” and I’ll be fine. I will remember it always and I will feel I’m not alone because both of you will forever stay in my heart. Just give me this chance to help you then after two years I’ll be home (to daddy Ben). My precious baby, cheer up! We’ll often see each other on Skype (to baby Bea). You want to go to school so show me now that you are not a cry baby anymore. So, now both of you can you just show me your “sweet smiles”! (Both smiled now – then embraced each other.)
(Grandpa and grandma arrive with the yummy food that they bought.)

Grandpa: Did we miss something? (Upon seeing them -)

Grandma: Come on! Skip the drama, I’m starving. Let’s eat now. (Everyone burst into laughter)

Lesson in life: A person can only do quality work for 8 hours straight a day. So, balance your time between work and family – if you want to save up and not spend your hard-earned money in the hospital!

Children especially teenagers can easily be corrupted due to negative environmental factors, lack of guidance from the family and changes happening within themselves. This script shows how a promising student can go astray in a blink of an eye just after a birthday party:

Scene I – School Campus: Khairul, an outstanding lower school student is approaching some students looking at the list of the top students in year six. (all eyes are on him)

Zamri: Congratulations… Khairul! You’re the top one student again in year 6 for the
2nd term.
Khairul: Really? (looking at the bulletin board) Oh yes! I’ve made it again.
Lina: Congratulations… Khairul! You’re unbeatable!
Khairul: Thank you Lina, I know you can do it also. (All the other students say: “Congratulations!” to Khairul. He humbly smiled and replied “Thank you”. When Khairul walks away, Zamri runs after him)
Zamri: Khairul, please wait for me. (Khairul, stopped walking) It’s my birthday today. I hope you remembered. Have you told your dad about it? My friends will be very glad to meet you as I’ve always mentioned your name to them. They know that you are always the best!
Khairul: Thanks Zamri and “Happy Birthday” too but I forgot to ask permission from my dad to join your party. I’m so sorry.
Zamri: Oh! No, don’t be. I’ll wait for your dad too. Please ask his permission then I’ll ask our driver to send you home after my party. (Dad arrives…)
Khairul: Dad, this is my classmate, Zamri. It’s his birthday today. Can I join his party tonight? They’ll send me home dad .I forgot to tell you yesterday.
Zamri: Please sir, I’ll ask our driver to send him home. He is my best friend.
Dad: Okay, but be sure to be home by 9 o’clock.
Khairul: Sure dad. I will. Thank you.
Dad: (to Zamri) “Happy Birthday”.
Zamri: Thank you, sir. Yihey! Let’s go…
Khairul: Bye dad.
Dad : Bye.

Scene II – At the Party:
Zamri: We’re here. I’m starving now.
Khairul: This is not your house! You’re having your birthday party here? Where are your friends?
Zamri: Oh! Here they are… you see – they’re bringing lots of foods and drinks for us. You will enjoy this man, believe me. Come, I’ll introduce you to them..Ahman, Aziz, this is Khairul – our top 1 student in the class. Remember, what I’ve told you about him?
Ahmad: Ah, yes of course. Glad to meet you Khairul.
Khairul: Glad to meet you too. ( Khairul gave a handshake to both)
Aziz: I’ve brought with us something that you won’t forget for the rest of your life.
Khairul: What are you talking about? I think I don’t belong here. I have to go home now so I can study our lessons. Where is your driver Zamri?
Zamri: Oh! Don’t worry, my friend, he will fetch us by 8 o’clock so you will be home before 9 o’clock as what we’ve promised your dad. Don’t be a sissy! Come on! We’re hungry, let’s eat now..
Aziz: (going near Kairul) Don’t worry, we won’t bite you, he he. Just joking, friend. We have to enjoy life while we’re still young. You’ll see what I mean. It’s hard to explain! It’s magical! Oh, come on – let’s enjoy the party now. (Everyone eats, small talk about the food)
Ahmad: Now, try this one – just a smoke to help us digest our food. (Khairul tried smoking then coughs, everyone laughs)
Aziz: Try again friend, you’ll get used to it! Life becomes more beautiful with this (kiss the cigarette) and this one too (shows a pill) – with this you can fly! Get one now!
Khairul: No, I won’t! That might hurt me.
Zamri: Oh! No! This won’t hurt you – just take it like this (shows how) It feels so good! Let’s enjoy life friend, don’t be so serious. It’s my birthday, let’s celebrate! Eat… drink…and be merry!
Ahmad: Be a real man like us!
Aziz: You’re a sissy.
Khairul: No, I’m not!
Aziz: So, try this one now! ( Khairul was forced to get one pill. In a little while, a change in him happened. He is acting strange now. Asking for more smoke that was Marijuana. Music in the background plays whilw Khairul is enjoying the party)
Khairul: This is cool! Wooh! I feel like flying! (car coming)
Zamri: The driver is back, keep those things. Khairul! Let’s prepare for home now.
Khairul: No, I still want – give me that thing again. It’s so good!
Zamri: Sssh! Quiet… don’t mention this to anyone or else you’ll never get any of these again .Do you understand?
Khairul: Yes, yes, my best friend, mwaah! (kisses his forehead) “Happy Birthday! “ (car honking)
Zamri: Hurry up! The driver is waiting outside .Fix yourself now and remember next time we come here, you should bring money. Do you understand?
Khairul: Yes, my friend. See you again tomorrow.

Scene III – Back to School
Khairul: Look dad, your son is the number one student in year six. Aren’t you proud of me?
Dad: Of course, I am, okay? I believe you now. Good bye, I have to go to the office.
Khairul: Oops dad. Where’s my reward? (dad gives money)
Dad: You’re clever. That’s why you brought me here.
Khairul: He, he, thank you dad. Oh! Dad, we have a project to do after school. Don’t fetch me this afternoon, Zamri’s driver will send me home again. I’ll be home before 9 o’clock. Don’t worry.
Dad: Okay son. No problem. I trust you.
Voice over: This becomes a habit of Khairul already- telling his dad that money is needed for school – basically for group projects. Sometimes for birthday parties and all other excuses – just to be with Zamri and friends who are bad influences until one day…

Scene IV – School Campus (Students looking at the bulletin board)
Lina: Oh, no! Khairul is not included in the list of the top 5 students for term3 anymore!
Yasmin: There are rumors around- that he is a drug addict now like his best friend, Zamri.
Safi: What? Khairul and Zamri are drug addicts? But poor Khairul…I thought he has brains. (Khairul overheard what the girls were saying. He got depressed, climbed up the ladder to reach the roof of the school building)
Ali: Look! Khairul is climbing up the ladder. Maybe he’s sad because he is no longer the top one student in year six. (Everyone gathered around and got frightened)
Lina: Come down Khairul…You might fall!
Khairul: No! I want to end up my life now. All of you – go away!
Teacher : Khairul, don’t do anything to harm yourself. You’re an intelligent boy – you know the right thing to do.
Khairul : I am not intelligent. I am dumb! My parents will know that I am no longer the top one student. They’ll not trust me anymore. They’ll hate me.
Teacher: In a few minutes, they will be here also Khairul. They love you. They will understand you. Come down.
Khairul: No! I’m sorry, teacher but I don’t deserve to be their son anymore. I am a bad son. They’ll be mad at me. I hate myself (says this three times) (shouting and crying now)
Mother: Son, don’t say that please, we love you. Come down now please…
Khairul: Mother, I’m ashamed of myself now. Everyone looks down on me. Dad will not be proud of me anymore.
Dad: That’s not true son, I am proud of you and will always be because you are my son. We will help you. Promise us that you will really be good this time and never tell a lie anymore.
Khairul: Dad, I am so sorry for the wrong things that I’ve done.
Dad: It’s alright son. Come down now. You might fall.
Khairul: Yes, dad, thank you so much! ( Khairul goes down the ladder, assisted by the dad. Mother embraced him)
Khairul: Please forgive me mom. I love you both.
Mother: We love you too son. Cheer up! Zamri is now in the rehabilitation center. He asked for forgiveness too.
Khairul: Thank you mom, dad. Both of you did everything for me. Promise, I’ll never hurt your feelings again and from now on, you will forever be proud of me. (Khairul embraced by mom and dad. A warm applause from everyone)

Lesson in life: Young minds are fragile. Constant parental guidance is a must!

Chocolate Cake

By: Geraldine G. Flores (Ms. “G”)

Our most popular cake. Of course anything choc...
Our most popular cake. Of course anything chocolate! (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A family of four with a strong bond, represented by the time and effort they all put in the kitchen while creating a magnificent piece of work – a moist, mouth watering chocolate cake with a beautiful `dark chocolate glaze. Unfortunately as time went by the distance grew, time spent in the kitchen lessened just as much as the time spent together. Parents too busy living their lives, failing to notice their elder daughter’s increasingly frequent headaches while the children are too innocent to speak up.

Part I : (On the set, Dianne while reading in the living room suddenly felt dizzy)

Dianne: Why am I always feeling this way? My head, oh, it’s so painful. (younger sister Donita appears)

Donita: Dianne, I’d better tell mom and dad about this!

Dianne: No, Donita, they’re both busy. They don’t even have time attending our parent-teacher meetings in school. Don’t worry, I’ll just take some medicine and then after a while, I’ll feel better again. [phone rings twice]

Donita: Reyes residence, good evening (listens to the caller). Dad…dad! The call is for you.

Dad: (To Donita) Thank you. (then speaks to caller on the phone) Oh, yes my friend, I did not forget our appointment tonight. I’ll just  take a shower  then I’ll see you all. Okay? Bye. (dad leaves the living room to get ready)

(Friends Rose and Peter knock at the door)

Rose: Hello Dianne. Hello Donita, you forgot  to attend our meeting this afternoon, that’s why we came to visit you now.

Dianne: Oh sorry, we forgot, please come in. Have a seat.

Peter: Thank you, we actually came here for your mom’s chocolate cake, yummy!

Dianne: I like it too, the chocolate cake of my mom is my favorite, the best of all the chocolate cakes I have ever  tasted in my whole life (about to cry) but I’m sorry – we no longer have any, she’s so busy these past few days. No more time to bake a chocolate cake.

Rose: Oh no Dianne, don’t be sad, don’t worry. Peter  is just kidding, we came here because you and your parents were not around during our meeting.

Donita: So what was the meeting all about?

Peter: We have agreed that we will go camping this weekend, we can bring along our parents.

Dianne: That would be nice, but would that cost too much? And where would that be?

Rose: Not at all! B$60 only for one person and it will include everything  already. We just have to bring our own personal  things. The bus will pick us up 6 am at the covered court.

Peter: Bring your favorite  swimming attire and your mom’s chocolate cake! Just kidding  Dianne. Temburong is so beautiful we could also go swimming there.

Rose: We will experience having a camp fire as we go singing, telling stories, dancing and playing too.

Peter: We will sleep in the tent and feel the real nature’s touch! I’ll bring my video cam with me, would you like to join us?

Donita: That sounds great! Dianne, please… let’s go with them.

Dianne: I’d love to Donita but we have to ask permission and money from our parents. (car sound – broom broom broom) That’s dad for sure.

Donita: Oh no! He’s gone, where’s mom?

Dianne: There in their room… busy.

Rose: Busy working at home?

Donita: No, busy preparing herself.

Rose: Hurry up! For sure she’ll allow you.

Dianne: I hope so, go now Donita,  ask permission from Mom.

Peter: Great ! So, we could count you in now.

Donita: Okay…mommy, mommy, where are you? Dianne, she’s no longer here. (Donita returns to the living room.) As usual she flew away again.

Peter: Is your mommy a bird?

Donita: Of course not! But whenever my dad goes out, she goes out too. We hardly even see each other at   home anymore. I wish everything was like before…mom baking a chocolate cake with me and Dianne, dad – taking our pictures and…(Donita says these lines w/ tears in her eyes)

Dianne: Donita stop. (to their friends) I’m so sorry, we can’t go with you guys on your camping trip this weekend…my head, it’s aching again. Donita, please give me some medicine now.

Donita: Yes, but we really need to go to the hospital, I’m really worried about you.

Dianne: Oh, no, we have no money.

Peter: Don’t worry, I have a lot of money in my  wallet, I’ll bring you to the hospital. (Peter trying to get his wallet from his pocket. Rose stopped her.)

Rose: Never mind showing it, let’s carry Dianne now.

Dianne: Thank you both, for being here. (then Dianne closes her eyes)

Donita: Please don’t leave me, I don’t want to be alone (crying now). Wake up please.

Peter: Hey you! Stop crying. She’s not dead – just dizzy, she’ll be alright. We will bring your sister to the nearest hospital. Go with me and Rose, please inform their parents. (Donita helped Peter carry Dianne instead)

Rose: Okay, I will! Better go now. Peter, take care of them.

Peter:Yes, I will, don’t worry.

Part II: (At the hospital, Dianne lying on a bed, mom and dad were fighting at first then Donita dramatically stops them upon hearing them both.)

Dad: Now, look at what you have done! You’re not in the house. It’s our neighbor  who took Dianne to the hospital.

Mom: Look  who’s talking, you don’t even know Dianne’s sickness.

Dad: You’re  supposed  to be the mom, you should know that.

Mom: And you’re the dad, you’re always out of the house. You don’t have time for us – always off with your friends leaving your family behind!

Dad: And you? You don’t care about us anymore. Maybe, it’s better for us to part ways.

Mom:  (Scoffs) You’re scaring me? Go away! (pushes dad to the door)

(Donita enters through the door. She was listening to their conversation.)

Donita: Dad, mom, I hate you both -even if   Dianne is here in the hospital, you still don’t stop fighting, I’d better leave you  both!

Dad: No Donita, come back!

(Donita about to leave but Dianne called them.)

Dianne: Donita, mommy, daddy (then closes her eyes)

(Everyone starts crying – thinking that Dianne’s gone already)

Mom: Dianne no, wake up, wake up! We love you both, we care for you.

Donita: Dianne, please don’t leave us. I’ll not run away anymore because I know that you’re here for me.

Dad: We’re so sorry Dianne, promise , we will be good parents to you from now on. We love you my daughter. I do love each and  everyone of you.

Dianne: (Wakes up smiling) I’m still alive, I heard all of you – everything you’d said and don’t worry the doctor says I’m okay. I’m very happy – we’re all together now.

Mom: Promise Dianne… from now on, I’ll take care of you and Donita and of course  your dad too. (daughters tease parents)

Dad: I love you (to mom)

Mom: I love you too.

Dad: Dianne, Donita, I love you both – very much  too.  From now on I’ll devote quality time for you, my family. I could never afford losing this wonderful family. I’m so sorry.

Dianne & Donita: Thanks dad, thanks mom, we love you both.

(As friends enter the door, family members  are still embracing each other)

Peter: Flowers for you Dianne from your dad. I bought it for him.

(Dianne looks at dad, smiles and says)

Dianne: Dad, thank You.

Rose: And your favorite chocolate cake too from your mom. She asked me to bring it here. She can’t wait to see you until she has finished baking.

Dianne: Mom, you still remember my favorite?

Mom: Of course Dianne, I love you. I’m so sorry.

Dianne: Thank you, mom.(Diane embraces mom)

(Both with tears in their eyes)

Peter: (Carrying the chocolate cake) Oops! Enough of the crying. The chocolate cake will melt! Can I have a slice now? I miss this badly too.

(Everybody laughs)

Rose: Pretty obvious! Come on pose  first with the chocolate cake. I’ll take a picture. Everyone…1, 2, 3, smile!

Lesson in Life: Never take your family for granted because they are all that matter in the world!

How to Script

By: Elena Grace Flores

Screenwriter Jim Jennewein visits VFS
Screenwriter Jim Jennewein visits VFS (Photo credit: vancouverfilmschool)

I was delighted to learn that my sister who is an avid script writer apart from being an acting coach and an actress herself – both on TV and stage plays is interested in submitting her original masterpieces to Carelinkwebpr for everyone to enjoy or learn from. We will be posting her scripts one by one in a regular basis. So, for dramatic enthusiasts out there – we will be happy to hear from you after reading her work. Should you need to share or re-publish any script, just do the necessary attributions. We will also appreciate it if you can allocate donations to our site – so that we can continue to help develop God-given talents through our blogs. Here are some tips on how to script for life as explained by our resident script writer, Geraldine Flores recently:

  1. Get Inspired to Start a Topic or Scenario
  2. Imagine the Setting of the  Play
  3. Create the Characters
  4. Plan the Plot
  5. Organize the Structure of the Play
  6. Narrate the Scenario in the Introduction
  7. Write the Story in the Body of the Script
  8. Compose the Dialogues
  9. Add Some Creative Punch Lines
  10. Write the Conclusion

How to script is just like acting – you have to feel every character you are writing about. Putting yourself in his or her shoes will help trigger your creative mind, heart and soul – thus making writing catchy dialogues very natural. It will just flow freely and before you know it, your eyes are already in tears or better yet, you are already sobbing or  laughing depending on the mood of the character.
