Gov. Imee Marcos’ Freedom of Expression: Not All UP Educators are Bitter with Martial Law

Critics say that it is a reunion unlike any other.  It allegedly happens in the bastion of youth activism against martial law. And the gathering of Kabataang Barangay (KB) members would have been unimaginable had it been done during the martial law years of the Marcos rule. Members of the KB original KB were at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, Quezon City, to celebrate its 43rd year. Criticisms are made known by UP’s anti-Marcos stalwarts. While educators who are democratic about it can only apologize. Gov. Imee Marcos respects both sides and takes it as freedom of expression.

Bitter Professors

Some professors of the University of the Philippines have expressed their displeasure on the reunion of the “Kabataang Barangay” right inside the UP Diliman campus.  Governor Imee Marcos also attended the gathering of the group formed back from Marcos’ Dictatorship. However, UP President, Danilo Concepcion is expressing regret over his participation in the reunion.

Ironic for the Martial Law Fighters

If it wasn’t for the irony of the venue, the event was pretty much run of the mill. UP Diliman was a stronghold of the resistance against Marcos’ Dictatorship. Furthermore, the Campus has been the stage of the First Quarter Storm.

Pro-Marcos Ambiance

The participants were sporting red and white shirts with the logo of the KB. They are presumably from KB Chapters all over the country. V signs and Fist signs were flashed as the attendants were photographed giving tribute to Marcos and Duterte. Gov. Imee Marcos was the guest of honor. She was appointed as the National Chair of the group by her father back when she was 21.

Election Protest Highlight

Imee Marcos was seen dancing in the event’s festivities. She was jiving to Rock Baby Rock and Boom Boom onstage. Also, she spoke of the electoral protest of his brother that is still ongoing.

An Apology from the President

The attendance of the UP President, Danilo Concepcion to the event drew ire on Social Media. For that, he is apologizing. He meant no offense, especially to the UP community. He only desired to spend time with the old friends that he hasn’t seen in decades, even if he has to overlook the sentiments of the UP community. He was also president of the Kabataang Barangay Federation back on 1976 till 78.
