Robredo leads the condemning of Abu Sayyaf’s diversionary tactics

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores

In this testing time, Vice President Leni Robredo is in one with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s goal of not allowing our country to be terrorized by Abu Sayyaf. Although the state of lawlessness worries some law makers, they all condemned the Davao blast claimed by the rebel group. Here’s the story:

Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano says President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of a state of lawlessness ‘is equally worrisome’

Vice President Leni Robredo on Saturday, September 3, condemned the explosion in a Davao City night market that killed at least 14 people and injured 71 others.

“We condemn this senseless and criminal act. In this difficult time, we must not allow violence and fear to divide our nation. Rather, let us all come together in fighting against the scourge of terrorism,” Robredo said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives or were injured in last night’s attack in Davao,” Robredo said.

“We call on calm and collective action in bringing about justice, peace, and order to our country,” the Vice President added.

The explosion happened on Friday evening, September 2, at the Roxas Night Market in Davao City.

This prompted President Rodrigo Duterte, long-time mayor of Davao City, to declare a “state of lawlessness” in the country. There was some confusion on the scope of the order after Special Assistant to the President Bong Go clarified that it’s limited to Mindanao, then later reverted to a nationwide declaration.

Aside from Robredo, lawmakers also issued statements condemning the Davao City explosion.

Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano said he considers the blast as one of the Abu Sayyaf’s “diversionary tactics…when major operations are conducted against them.”

The Abu Sayyaf has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Alejano, however, said Duterte’s declaration of a state of lawlessness “is equally worrisome considering the alleged violations of human rights already happening in the conduct of anti-drug operations.”

Senator Francis Pangilinan said in another statement, “We urge our law enforcers to get to the bottom of this cowardly act of terrorism and ensure that those responsible are held to account.”

Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV said: “This act of terrorism is unacceptable. We must bring to justice those responsible for the killing of innocent people and ensure that similar barbaric acts will not happen in the future.”

Davao City First District Representative Karlo Nograles, for his part, said he is condemning the terror attact “in the strongest sense.”

Nograles said: “We pray for the victims of the blast and their families, and assure them of government’s support. We also pray for those responsible for this abhorrent act, that you may realize humankind will not succumb to hatred. If you pursue your wicked agenda at the cost of innocent lives, it will only strengthen the people’s resolve to reject it.”

Duterte opted for Con-Ass after learning Con-Con will cost P50 Billion

welcome By: Elena Grace Flores
At his speech among the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting members in Malacañang recently, President Rodrigo Duterte explained his plan to utilize Con-Ass instead of Con-Con to give way to his Federalism quest but many objected because Com-Ass can be used by self serving law makers.

Constitution change through Constituent Assembly or Con-ass is where lawmakers from both houses of Congress would convene to change the 1987 Constitution. Duterte initially wanted a Constitutional Convention or Con-con but he changed his mind upon learning that it would cost the government at least P10 billion up to P50 billion.

The Charter Change that he tried to push either way would make way for his plan to shift the form of government to federalism. He warned lawmakers not to abuse their power to amend the Charter because through Con-Ass they will have more power to manipulate results before reaching the outxome.

President Duterte however vowed not to allow those self serving law makers in manipulating Con-Ass. His words were:“I will never allow it. I will tell them, “Don’t push it, because if you do, I will close down Congress. I will arrest you.” You choose. I am not kidding.”

He added that anything that would be agreed upon by lawmakers would be submitted to a plebiscite. The President wanted the country to have a Prime Minister and a President – and promised to resign when that happens in around four years time.
