Since the former President and now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is cleared of electoral sabotage, the battle of the pro and anti-Marcos senators is evident. Among the 2007 Team Unity “winners” was Juan Miguel Zubiri. Koko Pimentel contested Zubiri’s narrow victory over him before the Comelec. He was declared the rightful winner in the senatorial elections in 2011. However, a week before the Senate Electoral Tribunal reached the decision, Zubiri had already resigned as senator amid the alleged electoral fraud allegations that are currently proven as non-existent.
Judge Jesus Mupas said; “For failure of the prosecution to prove the guilt of accused Arroyo beyond a reasonable doubt and moral certainty despite ample opportunity and even without evidence in favor of said accused, the demurrer to evidence is granted and the charge of electoral sabotage against accused Arroyo is hereby ordered dismissed.”
Demurrer to Evidence
Mupas grants Arroyo’s Demurrer to Evidence, which means that the former president never presented evidence in the trial. The 6-page decision dismisses the credibility of the whistleblower, former Maguindanao provincial administrator Norie Unas, who said that he heard Arroyo say; It should be 12-0 in Maguindanao, even if you have to fix or change the results.
Pro Marcos Senator
Looking back, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri proposed in 2009 the construction of a 40-foot mega-floodway in Parañaque. This is to allow floodwaters to drain into the Manila Bay and prevent widespread flooding. He wanted to have another look into the Marcos-era mega-spillway plan as designed since the term of former President Ferdinand Marcos. Instead of holding miners in the neck, Zubiri is into strategic planning. Gina Lopez was even disappointed when he voted against her appointment as DENR Secretary.
Environmental Advocacy that Makes Sense
The frustration of Lopez is understandable. She can only blame the big mining businesses for the disastrous calamities. However, it is worth taking a look at how the government can support the mining industry to thrive without endangering the environment. This is what Marcos is advocating for and Zubiri echoes that.
Battle of the Senators
Senator Zubiri and Pimentel symbolize the pro and anti-Marcos supporters. Senator Koko Pimentel was critical of former First Lady and now Rep. Imelda Marcos on using her age to avoid detention if the verdict against her becomes executory. His father, Nene Pimentel has always been a critic of the late President Ferdinand Marcos and martial law during his regime. It looks like Zubiri’s and other pro-Marcos stalwarts’ right time is now.
SAP Bong Go is known as the “Little President.” He finds an equally reliable ally in the person of Senator Migz Zubiri. In the two decades that Zubiri knew him as a neighbor in Mindanao, he never asks for a percentage or any favor from the people that he helped. He does not even want to be in the limelight. Go takes the center stage only when he sings Karaoke after the President already settles at his home, said Zubiri.

The Cheapest is Not Always the Best
Malacañang said it is “very clear” that Special Assistant to the President Bong Go has nothing to do with the frigate project of the Philippine Navy. Go faces a Senate inquiry to answer allegations that he intervenes in the selection of the combat management system (CMS) for the 2 frigates. These are to be bought by the Philippines from South Korean firm Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). Zubiri does not even question this because he is for the project. Besides, the cheapest is not always the best, the Senator said.
Running for Senator?
It is observed that T-shirts printed with the phrase “Ready Set Bong Go” were distributed to Pangasinan farmers who received certificates of land reform ownership award. However, Go still has to confirm his candidacy. Earlier, he said that he is not yet ready for the Senate. Despite of this, endorsements and donation pledges keep on coming.
Go Bong Go
Another campaign for SPA Go is the “Go Bong Go.” initiative. The organizer with the imprinted slogan in his T-shirt said that he will do anything he can to help Go land in the top 5 of the 12 senators to be elected in 2019. Bong Go immediately wrote a letter after consulting the President for their claims at DPWH even before their official request. The least they can do he said which coincides with Zubiri’s testimony. So, he certainly gets support in lieu of his good deeds and not the other way around.
The Little President
Bong Go may not be as vocal as the President but he makes things done like his boss. His character did not change way back when he was still younger as the executive assistant of then-Congressman Rodrigo Du30. It would seem like magic if suddenly he gets corrupted by some fake news that the administration’s opponents are launching. Well, just like the out of the blue win of VP Leni Robredo that Bongbong Marcos is now protesting.
It’s about time that Senator Antonio Trillanes IV be made aware of the people’s pulse regarding his behavior in the Senate. He is confident that Senator Richard Gordon cannot get at least three Senatorial signatures for his ethics complaint against him. Trillanes dares him by saying that he’s not even afraid of the President.

Carpio and Paolo Duterte’s Invitation
Trillanes wanted to invite both President Rodrigo Duterte’s son, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, and son-in-law, lawyer Manases-Carpio after they were mentioned to be behind the so-called Davao Group. Carpio is the husband of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte. Gordon just replied; You may do so! But Trillanes continues to make general accusations that he cannot prove.
Not a Cockpit of Gossips
Gordon told Trillanes to refrain from making general statements that he cannot prove. This is because the Senate is not a cockpit of gossips. Instead of calming down, Trillanes responded by criticizing the way Gordon handles the committee hearing. He calls it names and criticizes Senator Tito Sotto as well.
Out of Order and Tune
Senator Gordon firmly said that Senator Trillanes is out of order but he can’t stop his mouth from opening. He even thinks that most Senators are on his side. Worst, he acts like the people’s hero when most Filipinos are wondering while he’s not kicked out yet with his ungentle man approaches.
Too bad for Trillanes, Gordon said he will pursue his ethics complaint against him. “He has done that consistently. I already forgave him the first time. He even came to my office and apologized then he did it to Mr. Zubiri. Then he was trying to do it to Cayetano, he was trying to turn off the microphone,” Gordon said.
Gina Lopez may not be comfortable around the Marcos due to family feuds in the past, it is certain that Bongbong Marcos is not the reason why Senators Gringo Honasan and Miguel Zubiri voted against her appointment as DENR Secretary being pro-Marcos senators.

Cohesive, Long-Term Mining Policy
Bongbong Marcos in 2015 sought for a “cohesive, long-term” mining policy to maximize the benefits of the vibrant industry. He was dismayed that the Aquino administration launched an “anti-mining stance” which is like what Gina Lopez is doing. This is probably why most Liberal Party senators voted for her.
Balance Between Unemployment and the Environment
Senator Gringo Honasan since 2012 is always concerned with mining restrictions. He said that; “those must be threshed out at the national level between the executive and the legislative branches. There are serious and important inputs from the local governments that must be considered. LGUs have to deal with problems like unemployment and environmental degradation. He stressed that there must be a balance between unemployment and the environment, therefore broader consultations with the involved sectors are crucial in imposing mining restrictions.
Another Type of Environmentalist
Gina Lopez said that she’s disappointed with Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri knowing that he’s an environmentalist. It is remembered that the senator proposed in 2009 the construction of a 40-foot mega-floodway in Parañaque – to allow floodwaters to drain into the Manila Bay and prevent widespread flooding. He wanted to have another look into the Marcos-era mega-spillway plan as designed since the term of former President Ferdinand Marcos. Instead of holding miners in the neck, Zubiri is obviously into strategic planning.
Voted Based on their Conscience
The frustration of Lopez is understandable – and she can only blame the big mining businesses that she threatened in her eight months as DENR Secretary. It is, however, worthy to take a look at how the government can support the mining industry to thrive without endangering the environment – and this is what Marcos, Honasan, and Zubiri are advocating for.
Senator Antonio Trillanes III already warned President Rodrigo Duterte that his biggest headache in his administration is the Marcos burial. However, it is Trillanes who gets the shock of his life when his being a smart ass did not have the chance to interfere with the former President Ferdinand E. Marcos’ burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. All is done before the public knew about it.

[VIDEO]: The heated exchange erupted after Zubiri protested Trillanes’ accusation against him and Sen. Richard Gordon that they wanted to whitewash a Senate probe involving former Bureau of Immigration officials.
Smart Ass VS the Cool Head
Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri who is notably cool despite being an arnis champion is pushed to his limits when Trillanes accused him and Gordon for whitewashing the bribery involving former Bureau of Immigration officials. The “words war” reveals the nature of each senator. Zubiri who is factual in everything and Trillanes who is into deception, arrogance, and malicious towards his political enemies and fellow senators. He calls Zubiri a cheater.
Trillanes’ Malicious Accusations via the Media
Trillanes announces to the media that Sen. Gordon and Zubiri do not want the bribery scandal of Sec. Aguirre, BI officials and Jack Lam to be investigated because they know that they can’t stop him. Now, they wanted the case to be in their committee to whitewash, the same as the EJK hearings last month, Trillanes explains. Zubiri reminds Trillanes of his rebellion and that he’s lucky for Pnoy’s pardon that’s why he’s out of jail and now serving the Liberal Party in return.
Zubiri Took Offense on Trillanes’ Accusation
Zubiri stresses that he does not care if there will be an investigation. He moves that the bribery scandal at the BI, to be investigated by Gordon’s Senate blue ribbon committee. Zubiri also insists that he has never been accused of engaging in a whitewash ever when he was a member of the House of Representatives.
Unpleasant Exchanges Are Now Off the Record – Trillanes Off the Hook?
Sotto moves to strike off the record the two senators’ unpleasant and unparliamentary exchange – citing that under any circumstances, a senator cannot throw offensive words against another senator. Will Trillanes get a disciplinary action?

Senators Leila de Lima and Miguel Zubiri agreed that Duterte’s impulsive ceasefire declaration has put the long time problem of insurgencies back to square one – because of bruised ego. It was not clear however if they are referring to the President’s ego thinking that he was able to hold the communist party in the neck just by lobbying them – telling in front of the media that they are not criminals and the victims of hatred instead.
Zubiri retained his composure by suggesting that when the tension eases down, bilateral peace talks must resume and should go back to the negotiating table. On the other hand, Senator Trillanes this time sided with Duterte – that what he did was right and that the president must not let the rebels go without holding them responsible with the terrorist act that killed a government soldier right after the SONA. The president must go after them for that; he said.
Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara said the President “had little choices left after the attacks,” but hopeful that confidence-building measures will continue. Sen. Joel Villanueva thought that the President “has to show he is serious on the peace offering,” but not sure if the NDFP’s is willing to negotiate. Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito stressed that “trust has been broken” because their deadly NPA attack. Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III is extending hand of peace and friendship, but dismayed to get nothing in return.” Sen. Panfilo Lacson observed that they are blaming the AFP for the ambush. Whatever it is, one thing is for sure that the ceasefire announcement is just to add some points in the not so impressive SONA speech of the president.
