Local Technology Skills Know-how Essential
According to a recent study, the technology, media and communications industries are expected to be the worst hit by talent shortage across the globe. This is where most skills in technology are neeeded. On top of that, concentration of innovative companies is in Metro Manila. It further worsens the situation. For example, many IT industry players focus their operations on the National Capital Region (NCR). This is despite the fact that cities and even provinces outside the NCR have many IT professionals. Therefore, non-IT graduates elsewhere must get the skills needed through specialized trainings.
The mismatch between job requirements and available skill set, and gaps in education and training have been identified as among the major challenges faced by the country today. Many sectors like RAFI tries to bridge the gap. However, the need is very urgent. Therefore, the participation of each business is crucial to equip the workforce with advanced technology skills for the 21st century jobs.
Mandate of the DOST
DOST Region 7 Director, Paradela clarifies that they are not trying to meddle with the affairs of the Department of Education. Instead, their campaign is to support skills training facilities that could provide the necessary know-how to the working class. This way, the local community residents won’t have to migrate to the capital or overseas to get a good-paying job. Such a remedy is the most ideal strategy in terms of nurturing families.
