RITM Continues to Function during the Pandemic
The RITM Project of Ferdinand Marcos
Former president Ferdinand Marcos is known to be “visionary” or advance thinker. So even after his death, Filipinos are still able to take advantage of his projects such as RITM to fight infectious diseases like what is happening now with the pandemic. That’s why this facility has been politicized since 1986.
EDSA Destroys the Initiatives of Marcos
If the 1986 EDSA had not happened, the Philippines might have its own vaccine already. It need not depend on other countries. However, due to the injustices against Marcos, the country went back to basic. This is why the current President, Rodrigo Roa Duterte urges Filipinos to find another Marcos. The good thing is, their chance to do that can be this 2022. The namesake of Ferdinand Marcos Bongbong is on his way back to public service. This time, in the executive office.
The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine
The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine existed since Marcos’s time in 1981. This is after the signing of E.O. 674. It authorizes the creation of a research facility under the Department of Health. The funds for this were from the Government of Japan. Together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The RITM is tasked with planning and implementing research programs for infectious and/or tropical diseases.
