Life and Death of the Great Filipino Leader
Marcos, born on September 11, 1917, was president from 1966 to 1969. He was reelected for a second term from 1969 to 1972. Marcos saved the country under Martial Law and stepped down in 1986 despite his reelection success. This is to avoid bloodshed during the EDSA revolt. He passed away on September 29, 1989, and his remains were arranged to be displayed at a museum in Ilocos Norte before it was moved to the Libingan ng mga Bayani in 2016. President Du30 and the Supreme Court approved the move.
Centenary Stamps for Former Presidents
The PhlPost had in the past issued commemorative birth centenary stamps for former president Diosdado Macapagal and for National Artists Manuel Conde, N.V.M. Gonzales, and Severino Montano. The PhlPost had also issued stamps to commemorate presidential inaugurations. The PhlPost printed 150,000 copies of President Duterte’s inauguration stamps in 2016.
Tomb as Tourist Attraction
Fewer tourists have also visited the Ferdinand E. Marcos Presidential Center, where the strongman’s remains used to be on display. With Marcos’ transfer to the Libingan ng mga Bayani, tourists have been cut to roughly a fourth. Only 33,135 visitors from January to May 2017 visited the venue compared to 131,168 during the same period last year.
Simple Celebration
Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos decided for a low-key event this year. Du30 declared Sept. 11 a holiday for the province of Ilocos Norte. The Marcos family has opted for a subdued commemoration. For the patriarch’s birthday, the Marcos family said a simple celebration will do. His widow, former First Lady Lady Imelda Marcos and only son, Bongbong Marcos remained active in politics together with his Governor daughter. His namesake can soon become the new Vice President of the Philippines if his electoral protest against Leni Robredo turns to his favor.
