Sen. Imee Marcos calls for more transparency on COVID19 effect on tourism
Senator Imee Marcos pushes the government to immediately release standby coronavirus funds to help wage earners from the worst-hit sectors.
Coronavirus Funds for Later Release
Marcos heads the Senate economic affairs committee. She divulges that there are funds “for later release” that can augment the “inadequate” P140 million in emergency funds of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). The Department of Budget and Management and other national agencies are likely sources.
More Funds Needed
Only 7,000 workers will benefit from DOLE’s emergency funds if each receives P20,000 in aid, Marcos said. She points out that more than twice the number of workers face lay-offs in the garment exports sector alone. Marcos adds that the DOT should redirect funds for marketing abroad to compensate for the loss of income.
