Quick Thinking on Travel Bans but Considering the Economic Effects as Well

President Rodrigo Duterte is not in favor of a total travel ban on South Korea. It has at least 1,595 cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), according to reports. Duterte says he cannot implement such a total ban. It risks isolating the Philippines. The country currently prohibits citizens from traveling to South Korea. Although, it excludes Filipinos who are workers, students, and permanent residents there. He also bars travelers from North Gyeongsang province.

Novel Coronavirus is Killing the Old People in Japan

The novel coronavirus kills older people at a very higher rate. Japan has the highest proportion of elderly people in the world. The number of reported cases in the country has steadily climbed to 230, with 11 deaths. The fatalities are mostly among people in their 80s. Globally, nearly 3,000 people have died, with the majority of deaths in China. South Korea and Italy’s recent surges in infections are also happening right now. They have moved quickly to test large numbers of people to treat and isolate the infected from others. This is not the case in Japan. It was also too late for their government to impose travel bans to the One China countries unlike the Philippine President, Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Primitive to Combat a Coronavirus Outbreak

The Filipino leader knows quite well that the national medical industry is too primitive when it comes to the devices, technologies, and facilities needed to contain the coronavirus if an outbreak occurs. Therefore, despite the great economic effect, the President needs to do what he has to do to protect his people. So far. Only 3 cases are confirmed in the country and 1 death that involves a man from Wuhan, China. The repatriates from the Diamond Princess cruise ship from Yokohama were properly quarantined in Clark prior to their release. Kudos, Mr. President!
