Robredo’s Plea

Vice President Leni Robredo urges the President “take back” his “reckless statement” about disregarding the decisions of Congress and the Supreme Court (SC). This is about on the declaration of martial law in Mindanao. “We urge the President: take back what he said about disregarding Congress and the Supreme Court…We trust that the President realizes that such reckless statements only further add to apprehension felt by many citizens,” Robredo issued the statement.

Clarification from the Palace

The president would certainly not defy high court in case it rules against the declaration of martial law in Mindanao. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Du30 only issued such a statement because he believes the military and the police. It’s not the legislature or the judiciary who are knowledgeable about the real situation on the ground.

The Congress and Supreme Court may review the proclamation of martial law or the suspension of the privilege of the writ habeas corpus should any citizen files a complaint. This is according to the sonstitution. However, the president does not need an approval from both for implementing it. So, what is the nagging of the Vice President all about?

Bitter with Marcos

“We cannot deny the power of Congress and the Supreme Court to review any proclamation of Martial Law and the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus. This is a process borne out of our bitter experience under the (Ferdinand) Marcos dictatorship,” Robredo said. Firs of all, the late Marcos was not a dictator. The VP just shows her insecurity that sooner rather than late, the Philippines will have its real Vice President in the person of the son, Bongbong Marcos.
